Tips On Online Job Search

Searching for a new job can be a long, difficult process, but the Internet can be a powerful tool to assist a job search. The Internet contains many resources that can help workers find jobs and increase exposure to potential employers. While the Internet should not be used as your exclusive job search vehicle, it is a resource that should not be ignored.

1.                            Spread a Wide Net

o                                                        The Internet is full of job search and employment websites and you never know which one might attract employers that will be interested in you. Don't focus all of your efforts on a single job site: Create profiles and post resumes to many different job sites to increase the chances that employers will see your resume.

2. Target Resumes

o                                                        The beauty of Internet job searching is that you have the ability to tailor your resume to the specific position you are applying for. Some job websites allow you to upload many different versions of your resume which can allow you to apply to different types of jobs with resumes that are targeted to the skill required by the job. For instance, if you are applying to an accounting position, you may want to omit an old job doing construction and focus on results and accomplishments of past accounting jobs. On the other hand, if you are applying to a new construction job, you should leave the old construction position on your resume as it is relevant experience. Online recruiters can receive large volumes of resumes, so it is important to make the resume as relevant to the position as possible.

Target Companies

o                                                        Another way the Internet can be used to advance a job search is to search for jobs at specific companies of interest. Many companies post career opportunities on their official websites and may even have channels for resume submissions. If you happen to get called for an interview, use the Internet to research the company as much as possible. Knowledge of a company will help you show your interviewer that you are about the position and help you explain how you can be an asset.

Sign up for Job Alerts

o                                                        It can take a lot of time and effort to sift through job postings and often doing so will turn up few relevant positions. Many online job websites allow you to sign up for job alerts. Job alerts are emails or other messages from the job site about specific positions that are relevant to your areas of interest. This can be a way to find the newest job openings as quickly as possible. ---c
