Protect Your Eyes From Effects Of
Smartphones, Computers.
Recent studies suggest that the increasing use of iPads,
smartphones and computers has left many young people with eye problems.
Specifically, eye experts say they are developing ‘dry eye’- a
condition that results in itchy and inflamed eyes after staring at the screen
of a computer, tablet or smartphone for hours.
They explain that the condition arises because humans normally
blink 12-15 times a minute, but using a computer screen can cut this to seven
or eight a minute.
According to them, such prevents the tear film – the lubricating
substance that protects the surface of the eye, from working properly.
However, Computer Vision Syndrome is said to be the most common
and estimated to affect up to 90 per cent of individuals who use a computer for
more than three hours a day.
It has been dubbed the “silent” problem, as many people do not
address these work related symptoms. They are said to believe it is caused by
tiredness or other factors.
While CVS has an obvious impact on visual comfort, it is proven to
have a significant impact on productivity.
The good news is that the condition can be prevented and properly
managed if certain steps are adhered to.
Some do-it-yourself measures to avoid this situation include
having a screen break, changing the focus of the eye by looking into the
distance regularly, and making a concerted effort to blink more.
Scientists have also come up with a number of devices that can
also prevent it from ever occurring.
One of such is BlinkNow, a webcam sized device that activates the
users’ subliminal blink reflex. It fits on top of or beside a computer screen
and within the users’ peripheral vision. The device then prompts users to blink
at a healthy rate thus overriding the blink suppression that can occur during
prolonged computer work. It does not hurt and does not require any medication.
The manufacturers say that after an hour or two, the user will
simply forget it is even there as the device carries on helping to prevent the
symptoms of CVS.
Users are advised to ensure their monitor is correctly set up, at
the right distance and height, ensure their glasses (if you need them) are
right for working at a computer as it will also aid the Blinknow device to
reduce sore eyes, tired eyes and dry eyes. This will in turn will help reduce
fatigue, double vision and headache .
